Her husband, the actor Liam Neeson, and their two sons, aged 13 and 12, were at her bedside.
Aged 45, she was a member of the Redgrave acting dynasty. She collapsed on Monday after falling during a beginner's lesson on a slope in Quebec.
In a statement, the actress' publicist said: "Liam Neeson, his sons and the entire family were shocked and devastated by the tragic death, but were profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone."
Acclaimed for her performances on stage and screen, Natasha Richardson won a Tony Award for her role as Sally Bowles in Sam Mendes' production of 'Cabaret' on Broadway in 1998.
Her other theatre credits included Eugene O'Neill's 'Anna Christie' and Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
On the screen her credits included: 'Patty Hearst', 'The Handmaid's Tale', 'The Comfort of Strangers', 'The Parent Trap', 'Maid in Manhattan' and 'Asylum'.
Natasha Richardson was an activist in the fight against AIDS and was on the board of the US-based charity amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research.
Paying tribute, a spokesperson for the charity said: "Natasha Richardson was a dedicated AIDS advocate and an eloquent spokesperson for amfAR.
"She generously contributed her time and resources to amfAR for over 15 years.
"Natasha's passion for the cause and tireless efforts gave hope and inspiration to the scientists and healthcare workers on the front lines of this deadly epidemic, as well as to the millions of people living with HIV/AIDS around the world."

Born in the town of Decin, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) on February 28th, 1984, Karolina Kurkova had a slight taste of what celebrity would be like, as her father Josef Kurka was a star basketball player. As a child, her height made her relatively awkward and gangly, but that would all change with age. A close friend recognized her beauty and sent photos of Kurkova to an agency in Prague. Kurkova immediately landed a runway appearance, not to mention a commercial and print ad. Still, being a model in the Czech Republic did not expose her to what fashion was really about, so Kurkova took a chance and traveled to Milan to gain some more experience. There, Miuccia Prada (the designer behind the famous brand name) signed her to a contract that proved to be the beginning of her stellar career. The usual contracts with big designers such as Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta and Balenciaga continued, and a recent tally put Kurkova's magazine cover appearances at 60 and counting. She is revered as much in the fashion world for her personality, which is described as intense and energetic, as for her looks. This attractive attitude leaves little doubt that Kurkova will emerge as a legendary supermodel; even Vogue editor Anna Wintour called her the "next supermodel." Living in New York's TriBeCa district with her longtime boyfriend, Karolina Kurkova is able to separate herself from modeling enough to enjoy courtside basketball games at Madison Square Garden. Jamie Yeo

Singapore television host Jamie Yeo gave birth prematurely to baby daughter Alysia at Gleneagles Hospital on Thursday, reported omy.sg. “I had no idea I was going to give birth, I thought I was just having stomach cramps that whole night,” said Yeo, who was caught completely off guard by the baby’s birth, who came about two and a half months early.
Fortunately, there were no other complications.
“The whole process was very smooth, I didn’t need to be anaesthetised or take painkillers,” said the 33-year-old.
However, due to her premature arrival, Yeo’s 1.2kg bundle of joy will have to spend the next four weeks in hospital.
“She looks so tiny. It really breaks my heart. I’m willing to do anything for her,” said Yeo.
Alysia is Yeo’s first child with husband Englishman Thorsten Nolte, 35, whom she married in a quiet ceremony earlier this year.
Yeo was previously married to radio personality Glenn Ong, 39, until their high-profile separation in 2009. They were married for five years.

Alena was born on March 21, 1978, in Prague, Czech Republic. Her modeling career started at the age of 15. Five years later, she was named Miss Czech Republic. This launched Alena’s international modeling career and opened the door for her to act as cohost for Italian comedian Giorgio Panariello in 2002. Her successful turn on this show enabled her to act as cohost on a few other shows in Italy.
